The ladies have been working...

When we returned home from our Christmas vacation in CA, we found that our chickens had finally started producing! Lulu, Gretel, and Lady Jane Grey are now earning their (delicious!) keep :)

  1. Ok, so tell me, how much work is it to keep chickens? How often do you clean their coop? Brian and I think about it sometimes, and my boss and her hubby do as well, but none of us have been bold enough to do anything. We're all kinda lazy. Actually, for most of us it's that we're too busy. So, how much, and how often, is the upkeep?

  2. Not much work at all! Definitely easier than cats or dogs. Jonathan built a small coop (very rustic-looking); they don't need a lot of space. We also add kitchen compost every day, and he added leaves (plentiful in our backyard). We don't clean their coop because it has a dirt floor and they sleep on their roost (a stick propped across the coop) so their droppings don't get in their nest area. They just need food (we buy it at a farm store) and water. If you get them as chicks, they are a lot more work; we got them a little older so they could be outside alone. Do it! They are so funny to watch and the eggs are yummy! :)

  3. well you sure make a convincing case! Do they have a home in the coop? A wooden box to go inside? Don't you need to clean that out? And you haven't needed to rake out the dirt floor? We had chickens growing up and I can remember cleaning it, I just don't remember how often we did so, as it was a big coop.

  4. Friend! So sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I've been "fasting" from blogging/reading blogs, so I'm back! The ladies have a little wooden board where they lay. Jonathan covers it with leaves occasionally (maybe he replaces the leaves? I'm not sure) when the chickens knock the leaves off. Their floor is not flat (the coop is on a hill) and hard to get into so we don't clean it (possibly J throws leaves in there? Again, not quite sure as he takes care of them more than I do); although I do know whatever he does is easy because he's never outside caring for them long. Lately we've been getting 2-3 eggs per day (brown, whitish, and greenish!). :)
